Description

A rare late-17th century Dutch silver two-handled porringer,

by Gillis Prick, Maastricht, circa 1670,

shallow circular form, with cast and pierced foliate side handles, the underside scratch initialled 'A', length handle to handle 25.4cm, height 5cm, approx. weight 9.8oz.

Gillis Prick was an assayer of the Maastricht Silversmiths Guild in 1661 and 1662. He was Governor in 1663, 1668 and 1678.

A similar porringer by Nicholas Ernou, Maastricht, 1684-1686 was sold at Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 17 May 2004, lot 12.

The catalogue notes mention 'an almost identical porringer, made by Gillis Prick from Maastricht in 1670-74, is in the collection of the Protestant Parish of Helmond'.
