FIFTEEN CHINESE WOOD CARVINGS CONTAINED IN A PARCEL-GILT PEWTER BOX

QING DYNASTY OR LATER

Probably aloeswood, the carvings formed as lingzhi, fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts, the circular box decorated to the cover with phoenix and other birds amongst blossoming peony branches, the birds depicted flying under clouds and the sun incised with the character ri, with an inscription on silk to the underside of the cover, 12cm max, the box 34.5cm, 4.2kg overall. The inscription to the cover is a poem about the items and states that they are carved in chen xiang. The inscription is dated to the guihai year and the seal mark reads Jiaqing yu bi.
