A JAPANESE HANIWA POTTERY FIGURE
KOFUN PERIOD, 5TH/6TH CENTURY
Modelled as the head and torso of a male warrior with his arm outstretched, his mouth slightly open and with almond-shaped eyes, his hair tied up into two buns, the earthenware surface with flecks of mica and vertical striations to the lower part of the body, raised on a modern wood stand, the figure 43.5cm. (2)
Provenance: from an English private collection, London. Purchased from Christie's, London, Fine Japanese Ceramics, Prints & Works of Art, 12th March 1985, lot 376. A copy of the original invoice is available.
