A JAPANESE INLAID SHAKUDO UMETADA TSUBA
EDO PERIOD, 18TH CENTURY
Of circular form, decorated in openwork with rhomboid and circular apertures, with arabesques in gold inlay, unsigned, with Hozon Tosogu (Sword fitting Worthy of Preservation) certificate no.4005012 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (The Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), dated 2nd May 2014, in a kiri box, 7cm. (3)
Provenance: from a private European collection.
The Umetada family worked for many generations for the Ashikaga Shoguns during the Muromachi Period (1333-1573). Umetada Myoju (1556-1631) is known as the 'father of the modern sword'.
