A JAPANESE IRON KAMAKURA TSUBA
EDO PERIOD, 17TH CENTURY
Of thin lobed form, the surface with a repeated warabite design of scrolls following the rim, in a kiri box, 7.6cm. (3)
Provenance: from a private European collection.
Kamakura tsuba were made from the late Muromachi to the Edo period. The bodies are usually rather thin with large carvings. The Kamakura style refers to the type of engraving called Kamakura-bori , a Chinese engraving technique used on lacquerware. Most designs on Kamakura tsuba have a Chinese influence.
