Description

A JAPANESE LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF AMIDA NYORAI (AMIDA BUDDHA)

MUROMACHI PERIOD OR LATER, 16TH CENTURY OR LATER

Depicted standing and wearing long robes loosely draped across his torso, the eyes downcast in a serene expression; with a glass or crystal urna on his forehead and remnants of gilt lacquer to the robes, 38.5cm.

Sculptures and paintings depicting Amida Nyorai became popular during the 12th century and were placed near the beds of dying devotees to bring them comfort.
