A JAPANESE WOOD MODEL OF SHO KANNON

HEIAN PERIOD OR LATER, 11TH CENTURY OR LATER

The body carved from a single block of wood, the figure shown standing with one arm raised higher than the other, dressed with long flowing robes and with a tall headdress, with a glass or crystal bead on her forehead signifying spiritual elevation, ushnisa, the head with remnants of gesso and traces of pigment, raised on a rectangular wood stand, the figure 61.5cm. (2)
