A JAPANESE SMOKING SET, KISERUZUTSU, TABAKOIRE AND KISERU
LATE EDO OR EARLY MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY
The pipe case made up of strips of bamboo tightly woven to form various geometric patterns; the fabric tobacco pouch decorated with flowerheads and scrolling tendrils rendered in Peking knots, the shakudo kanamono shaped as a flower; the pipe in bamboo, its mouthpiece and bowl in silver and gilt with patterns of chrysanthemum flowers amongst waves, signed with a two character mark, 20.2cm max. (3)
Provenance: formerly the collection of Sir Sydney Richard Wells, 1st Baronet, D.L., M.P. for Bedford (1879-1957) of Felmersham Grange, Bedfordshire, and thence by descent.
