A JAPANESE WOOD OKIMONO OF AN ONI NEMBUTSU
MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY
The repentant demon wearing monk's robes and a drum suspended around his neck, holding a donation ledger in one hand inscribed Hoga cho (subscription list) and rising a drum beater in his other hand, the gong and his eyes inlaid in mother of pearl; together with a stag antler handle carved as an oni climbing over a pole, the demon with a bowl cut made of the original antler hair, both unsigned, 8cm and 11.5cm respectively.
