A NEAR PAIR OF LARGE CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE 'PEONY' BALUSTER VASES AND COVERS
QING DYNASTY
Each painted with large peony blooms set amidst scrolling leafy branches, the design contained between bands of ruyi-heads and lappets, each with four applied animal masks to the shoulder, the short necks decorated with sprays of bamboo, the covers surmounted by finials formed as seated lion dogs, 64cm and 63.5cm. (4)
Provenance: from the collection of the late Hubert René Joseph Georges Faure (1919-2020). Hubert Faure was the first husband of Elizabeth (Bessie) de Cuevas, who married when she was nineteen. Bessie was the daughter of Margaret Rockefeller, granddaughter of John D Rockefeller.
