Catalogue Note

The Pratt family descends from Sir John Pratt, Lord Chief Justice from 1718-1725. The Pratt family were lawyers and politicians and Sir John's son, Charles (1713-1794), served as Lord Chancellor between 1766 and 1770. He was created Baron Camden in 1765. He acquired large property holdings in the then northern outskirts of London, the area subsequently becoming Camden Town. John Jeffreys Pratt (1759-1840) served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. In 1812 he was created Marquess Camden. Sir John Pratt bought the Bayham Abbey estate in 1714, constructing a resident adjacent to the abbey ruins. The present chair was housed at Bayham Manor.
