A RARE JAPANESE WOOD DOLL'S HOUSE

MEIJI PERIOD OR LATER, 19TH OR 20TH CENTURY

Constituted of three connected structures: the main two-storey building to the left with movable shoji paper walls, the removable roof revealing the upstairs rooms furnished with low cabinets; a small teahouse with railings facing a pond to the centre, and a shrine to the right with a torii-shaped entrance, together with two small Chinese wood carvings of seated ladies, 40cm x 72cm x 31cm. (4)

Provenance: from the collection of Cavendish Morton (1874-1939). Morton was a British actor, photographer, and art director. Many of his photographs are today on display at the National Portrait Gallery, London.
