A TIBETAN THANGKA OF THE THOUSAND-ARMED AVALOKITESHVARA

19TH CENTURY

Painted with the central figure of Avalokiteshvara dressed in robes of green and red, each head adorned with an elaborate crown, one pair of hands is held in vitarka mudra, the others carry a variety of sacred objects and Buddhist emblems, he stands upon a lotus base decorated with various beasts, dragons and bodies, and is encircled by a ring of flames, three Buddhas are supported by clouds at the top of the thangka, whilst the demon God Yama is detailed below, the scene framed by further embroidery, 74cm x 21.2cm.
