A Bali rice sheath paddle panaptapan
Indonesia
with a carved smiling face wearing a headdress, with a black patina and red pigment underneath, the back flat and with a curved handle, 19th century,
35.5cm long.
The rice paddles were used to flatten the top surface of the bundles of rice, before they were taken to the rice barns.
