The sitter was the daughter of Sir Thomas, 1st Duke of Leeds, Lord High Treasurer of England, and his wife Bridget, daughter of Montague Bertie, Earl of Lindsey, Lord Great Chamberlain of England. She married, firstly, Robert Coke of Holkham and later Horatio Walpole.
