The sitter bears some resemblance to Paul Methuen MP (1723-1795) of Corsham Court, painted by Reynolds in the late 1750s (see David Mannings, Sir Joshua Reynolds, A complete catalogue of his paintings (New Haven and London, 2000), text vol., p.331, cat. no.1242).
