Description

A Regimental silver table cigar cutter, The 44th Merwara Infantry,
by the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company, London 1910,
rectangular form, sprung cover with three cutters, engraved with the Regimental badge and inscribed 'Presented to The Officers 44th Merwara Infantry by Major F. W. Thomas 1913', on a tapering rectangular foot, length 11cm, approx. weight 8.6oz.
In 1914 the Regiment was stationed at Ajmer (Rajasthan). In 1915 it was deployed to Mesopotamia. After the war the Regiment returned to Ajmer and in 1921 it was disbanded. In 1914 Major Thomas was transferred to the 9th Bhopal Infantry and on the 13 June 1916 he was wounded at the Battle of the Wadi and died on the 26 June. He is buried in the CWGC cemetery at Amara Irag.
