Description

A 19th century Regimental old Sheffield plated wine coaster, The 88th The Connaught Rangers Regiment of Foot,
by Creswick and Co., circa 1840,
circular form, foliate, gadroon and shell border, the turned wooden base set with a central button engraved with the badge, diameter 16.5cm.
The 88th saw service in the Peninsular War and the Occupation of Paris in 1815-1817. It was deployed to Malta in 1840, and in 1844 certain items of silver plate were ordered. They served in Crimea and the Xhosa war of 1877-78. In 1881, the Regiment amalgamated with the 94th Foot to become the 1st Battalion The Connaught Rangers.
