A SET OF FIVE JAPANESE BLUE AND WHITE DISHES

EDO PERIOD, 18TH CENTURY

The foliate dishes with brown-edged rims, each decorated with a central medallion enclosing a man on a small boat with the moon above, with lines of calligraphy to the rim and cavetto, possibly from the Chinese poem 'Ode to the Red Cliff', the bases with the same stylised character, all approx. 15cm. (5)

Provenance: from the collection of the late Gas Kimishima, wood-fire potter and specialist in the ancient kilns of Japan, purchased in Japan and thence by descent. Gas established his studio in England and built his own anagama kiln in Tring, Hertfordshire.
