A SET OF FIVE JAPANESE MOULDED BLUE AND WHITE DISHES

EDO PERIOD, 18TH CENTURY

Each dish modelled as a shell, all decorated with the same design of two cranes in flight amongst scrolling clouds and with a large daikon and flowerheads to the side, with brown-edged rims, 15.2cm. (5)

Provenance: from the collection of the late Gas Kimishima, wood-fire potter and specialist in the ancient kilns of Japan, purchased in Japan and thence by descent. Gas established his studio in England and built his own anagama kiln in Tring, Hertfordshire.
