TWO LARGE JAPANESE BLUE AND WHITE BOWLS

EDO PERIOD OR LATER, 18TH OR 19TH CENTURY

The largest painted to the well with a circular mountainous river landscape within a border of scrolling tendrils and stylised flowers and butterflies, the reverse with further butterflies and waves; the other bowl decorated to the centre with a scholar on a bridge gazing at the moon, with thatched huts to the side and branches of maple above; the exterior with further landscapes, 28cm and 25.3cm respectively. Provenance: from the collection of the late Gas Kimishima, wood-fire potter and specialist in the ancient kilns of Japan, purchased in Japan and thence by descent. Gas established his studio in England and built his own anagama kiln in Tring, Hertfordshire.
