TWO JAPANESE BLUE AND WHITE BOTTLES (TOKKURI)
MEIJI OR LATER, 19TH OR 20TH CENTURY
The largest of bulbous shape, decorated with lines of calligraphy in underglaze blue; the other of double-gourd shape and painted with a continuous river landscape, with a thatched hut nestled amongst rocky outcrops, the base with a square seal mark in underglaze blue for Kutani, 27cm and 18.5cm respectively. (2)
Provenance: from the collection of the late Gas Kimishima, wood-fire potter and specialist in the ancient kilns of Japan, purchased in Japan and thence by descent. Gas established his studio in England and built his own anagama kiln in Tring, Hertfordshire.
