A JAPANESE BLUE AND WHITE VASE

MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY

The bulbous body decorated in underglaze blue with a continuous river landscape, with mountains in the distance and small buildings nestled amongst the trees, two figures standing before a hut and with sampans and sailboats to the side, 26cm.

Provenance: from the collection of the late Gas Kimishima, wood-fire potter and specialist in the ancient kilns of Japan, purchased in Japan and thence by descent. Gas established his studio in England and built his own anagama kiln in Tring, Hertfordshire.
