TWO TALL JAPANESE BAMBOO BASKETS, HANAKAGO

MEIJI OR TAISHO, 19TH OR 20TH CENTURY

For ikebana (traditional flower arrangement), both with a cylindrical body and a tall loop handle, one bi-colour and plaited in a free-style technique, with a liner made of a section of bamboo; the other with regular woven patterns, 46cm and 39cm respectively. (2)

Provenance: from the collection of the late Gas Kimishima, wood-fire potter and specialist in the ancient kilns of Japan, purchased in Japan and thence by descent. Gas established his studio in England and built his own anagama kiln in Tring, Hertfordshire.
