A JAPANESE CLOISONNE VASE BY ANDO JUBEI (1876-1953)

MEIJI OR LATER, 20TH CENTURY

The baluster body decorated with two pheasants on a rocky outcrop and with a stream running beside them; with large chrysanthemum, daisies and other plants to the side, all on a dark navy-blue ground, with bands of formal flowers and geometrical patterns above the foot and to the neck; with metal mounts, the footrim with a minute two-character mark, posssibly for jungin (pure silver), the base with the circular Ando mark, together with a wood stand inset with a silver plaque inscribed 'to Vice-Admiral R. B. Holt, January 1940, from K.Oikawa, Admiral I.J. [Imperial Japanese] Navy', 24.5cm. (2)

Provenance: the collection of Vice-Admiral Reginald Vesey Holt, CB, DSO, MVO, (1884-1957), and thence by descent. The vase was gifted by Admiral Koshiro Oikawa (1883-1958), the Japanese Naval Minister during World War II.
