Catalogue Note

John Gatehouse was listed as a cabinet-maker in a document giving details of people living and working in St Andrew, Holborn in 1695 and continued working into the early 18th century. Christopher Gilbert's book, the Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, published in 1996, illustrates two walnut bureau bookcases, an oak bureau and a walnut portable chest each applied with a very similar label.
