A PAIR OF FRENCH EMPIRE BRONZE SPHINX CHENETS

AFTER PIERRE-PHILLIPPE THOMIRE (FRENCH 1751-1843), EARLY 19TH CENTURY

each with a sphinx wearing a Nemes headdress, on a rectangular base, with rounded ends applied with winged, ribbon and lightning bolt decoration, on raised wrythen toupie legs and bun feet (2)

Hans Ottomeyer and Peter Pröschel, "Vergoldete Bronzen", 1986, p. 341, pl. 5.4.6, shows a gilt and patinated bronze fender with similar sphinxes by Pierre-Philippe Thomire, with very similar motifs to the base panels
