λ AN ANGLO-CHINESE EXPORT PADOUK SOFA GAMES TABLE

EARLY 19TH CENTURY

inlaid with stringing and banding, the drop-leaf top with a sliding central reversible chequer board revealing a backgammon board inlaid with lozenges, above a double sided frieze drawer with ivory handles, on trestle ends and brass castors

72cm high, 59cm wide, 59cm deep

See Carl L. Crossman, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, pp. 236 and 237, pl.88 and 89, for two comparable examples with similar interiors. According to the author the interiors were based on a gaming box by Thomas Chippendale for Paxton House in 1774.
