Description

An 18ct gold pocket watch, Dent & Co., circa 1886, the front with central aperture and Roman numeral indicators in blue enamel, opening to reveal a white enamelled face with blued steel hands, surmounted by winder and handle, the interior of the front inscribed 'Presented by Lord Clinton's North Devon Tenantry and and Employees, December 1886', the reverse with the initials CFT, British hallmarks for 18ct gold, sponsor's mark EN, date letter for 1886, numbered 30238, gilt metal watch chain
The 'Lord Clinton' in the inscription refers to Charles Hepburn-Stuart-Forbes-Trefusis, 20th Baron Clinton (1834-1904), a conservative MP and landowner in Devon and Scotland, who served as Under-Secretary of State for India 1867-8.
