Description

Boer War interest: A set of four mounted candlesticks, on domed bases with plain capitals and detachable nozzles, the columns formed from mounted military 'one pound' shells * by Alexander Jones, London 1900, retailed by "Jones, 41st James St", 6.3in (16cm) high. (4) * These shells are probably from a Boer "Pom-Pom" gun, which was essentially a converted Maxim machine gun that had a firing rate of 60 rounds per minute - but usually had a belt of 25 one pound shells. Australians at Elands River Post, South Africa said it could cover an acre with shells as fast as a person could count.
