the ivory ground centred by an armorial shield for Cleland quartering Jackson and impaling Leyland, framed by swags of naturalistic flowers and four further shields

Catalogue Note

This rug was probably made for John Cleland of Stormont Castle, Co. Down (1836-1893) and his wife Therese Maria, co-heiress of Captain Leland, of Haggerston Castle, Northumberland. John and Therese married in 1859.
