An Italian maiolica salt, 18th/19th century, in the Urbino Renaissance manner, modelled with two putti holding a large shell and seated on the edge of an oval base, the well painted with the portrait of a soldier, the sides with mythical creatures, some glaze chipping, 20.5cm across.
