FURYUJIN (ELEGANT BATTLES) AT THE CHINESE COURT
EDO PERIOD, 17TH/18TH CENTURY

A Japanese five-fold byobu (paper screen), lavishly painted in ink, colour, and gold leaf on paper; embellished with the Chinese Imperial couple watching court ladies fencing with bouquets of flowers attached to long poles, the Emperor sat on a throne to the right of the composition and the Empress depicted in a pavilion on the left, both with attendants carrying goods; the courtyard and pavilions by a lake and with a waterfall flowing down a mountainous outcrop in the distance, with gold clouds above; 169.5cm x 315cm overall.
