the top with a moulded edge above four long graduated drawers, with brass 'S' shaped escutcheons, with canted angles carved with leaves

Catalogue Note
The distinctive ‘S’ shaped keyholes on this commode follow examples used by Sir Thomas Chippendale and occasionally by his contemporary John Cobb. The locks were the speciality of the Gascoigne family which are occasionally stamped. See Christopher Gilbert , The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, pp.146-147 pl. 267.
