Description
Gillows. A George III satinwood serpentine front commode, with purplewood banding and inlaid stringing, the shaped super-structure with a shelf, the frieze drawer stamped 'Gillows (twice) Lancaster,' with cast gilt brass foliage handles, with paterae above a pair of cupboard doors enclosing a shelf, on square tapering legs and block feet, 133.5cm (52.5in) high, 106cm (41.75in) wide, 43cm (17in) deep. Provenance: Trevor, Mount Street, London, 1989. Literature: Lindsey Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800. Plate 122 illustrates a similar commode, (though without frieze drawer), dated 1789.
