William W. Armstrong (1822 - 1914)
Halt on the Plains
watercolour, signed Armstrong,
29.5cm x 38cm.
The verso with a hand written note and a typed version of the same -
No. 2. "Halt on the Plains". The drawing shows a portion of the Hunters' tents which are made of Buffalo Robes, hair inside and which are very comfortable. In winter the fire of wood on Buffalo Dung is lighted in the centre of the tent. The tent sides are ornamented with horns of Deer used as pegs on which to hang trophies of the chase, guns etc. - the poles A A are used to spread open the tent towards the wind in hot, and away from it, in cold weather - The smooth side of the skins is painted in all kinds of ways -
The typed version is headed - Thomas George Fardell (b 1833. d. 1917) visited the United States of America in 1861. Three amateurish paintings were kept by him and his son and grandson of which this is one. The orginal note on the back is his handwriting.
