A PAIR OF BRONZE HELLENISTIC STYLE CANDLESTICKS
AFTER THE MODEL BY GIOVANNI-BATTISTA PIRANESI (1720-1788), EARLY 19TH CENTURY
each with a lobed drip-tray above a foliate column and three storks on ram's heads, the triangular base with three sphinx and three lion paw feet, fitted for electricity (2)

Catalogue Note
The original candelabras, from which these took inspiration, are held at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. They were donated to the Ashmolean by Sir Roger Newdigate who bought them directly from Piranesi who in turn took inspiration from Roman marble tripod stands.
