Catalogue Note
Samuel Folwell (1764-1813) was an American artist based in Phildelphia. He is best know for creating works of mourning art. It is recorded that in 1791 George Washington visited Samuel Folwell, a miniature painter and 'cutter of profiles' and he painted a silhouette of him in Indian ink.
