Catalogue Note

A design for a 'circular movable bookcase' under the patent of Morgan and Sanders was published in Rudolph Ackermann's, The Repository of Arts in 1810. According to Ackermann, this 'ingenious and elegant contrivance' derived from the form of dumbwaiters, affords some 'valuable conveniences'. A related four-tier revolving bookcase is illustrated in Margaret Jourdain, Regency Furniture 1795-1830, p.83, fig.197. For a related example See Christie's, Kinross House Sale, 30th March 2011, lot 20.
