A JAPANESE GOLD AND BLACK LACQUER SUZURIBAKO (WRITING BOX AND COVER)
EDO OR MEIJI, 19TH CENTURY

Of tall rectangular shape, with two small drawers at the front, an inner tray, an ink stone and a fitted circular suiteki (water dropper); together with an assortment of kogo (small boxes) of various sizes and shapes, a natsume, and a bronze mirror with kagamibako fitted box, the circular metal disc cast with pine, cranes and minogame; all the lacquer elements decorated with the same design of pine branches and blossoming prunus, all rendered in gold hiramaki-e, fundame, kirikane and nashiji on the black roiro ground, some boxes with the insides decorated in red lacquer; the writing box 19.2cm x 20cm x 26.5cm.
