Description

A CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE YEN YEN VASE
KANGXI 1662-1722

The body and neck painted with a continuous watery landscape with scholars on the shoreline and fishermen on sampans, 45.8cm.

Provenance: from an English private collection, acquired in the 1930s.

This shape of vase is typical of the Kangxi period and is also referred to in Chinese as fengweizun, or 'phoenix-tail'. Derived from the earlier gu shape, its characteristic structure with a narrow neck below a wide flared rim relates to the mythical bird's tail. The term yen-yen used in the West is derived from the Cantonese term yan meaning 'craving', and speaks to the historic European demand for vases of this type. Similar blue and white examples with two continuous registers of decoration can be seen for instance in the British Museum, London, accession no.Franks.107, and in the Gardiner Museum, Toronto, accession no.G99.10.3.
