Joseph Gregg disembarked in France on the 31st July 1915, with the 10th Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. On the 11th of August the following year his battalion attacked enemy positions opposite Bazentin le Petit, to the West of High Wood, capturing a section of trench in spite of inadequate artillery cover, and holding it against repeated counterattacks. It was for his conduct on this day that Gregg was awarded the MC (London Gazette 21st October 1916). His second award bar was gazetted on the 23rd March 1917.
