AN ELIZABETH I OAK ARMORIAL PANEL

LATE 16TH CENTURY

carved with the quartered arms for the Frere (Fryer) family of Water Eaton Manor, Cherwell, Oxfordshire, above scrolling foliage and a stylised dragon head, mounted in the door of a Victorian oak mural cabinet with a nulled frame flanked by carved and turned columns and enclosing five drawers with lion head, lozenge and lunette decoration

Catalogue Note

William Frere (d.1612) was a member of Oxford's mayoral council between 1583 and 1603 and was sheriff between 1596-7. Water Eaton Manor was built for Frere c.1586.
