Catalogue Note

Pope Cornelius reigned from 251 to 253AD and is considered a local patron saint in Kornelimünster, Germany. The Victoria & Albert Museum holds a 16th century stained glass panel of Pope or Saint Cornelius wearing a similar triple crown to that shown in the present lot. See V & A, accession no. c.325-1928.
