The watch has always been an essential tool for divers. The Rolex Double Red, so called for the dial having both 'Sea-Dweller' and 'Submariner' in red, took the watch to vastly increased depths. The Rolex Submariner model 6204 launched in 1953 was guaranteed to depths of 2000 feet. However, the need for diving to greater depths was soon apparent, particularly as some watches were literally exploding on ascension from deep dives. In 1967, Rolex released the Sea-Dweller model with a helium escape valve which coped with depths up to 610 metres. The Double Red model 1665 was the rarest and most efficient Submariner and has consequently become one of the most desired Rolex models for collectors.
