Description

A St Louis cut glass suite in the 'Tommy' pattern, c.1930, cut with vertical flutes above a diamond band and raised on star cut feet. Comprising: a water jug, three decanters and stoppers, 13 red wine glasses, 16 white wine glasses, six highballs, 13 bowls or rinsers with 11 stands. (66)
The Tommy pattern was designed in 1928 by Joseph Bleichner to commemorate 10 years since the end of the First World War. It was inspired by the poems of Rudyard Kipling, and named after the British colloquial term for a common soldier. The pattern became well-known in 1938 when the president of France invited George VI to a banquet at Versailles.
