A CHINESE INTERIOR-PAINTED GLASS 'ELEPHANT' SNUFF BOTTLE
DATED 1901
Dated the xinchou year, one side painted with a black elephant bathing in front of a bridge, the reverse with a poetic inscription describing the scene, signed Ma Shaoxuan, 6.2cm.

馬少宣作玻璃內題陋室銘畫太平有象鼻煙壺
題識:辛丑秋日仿八大山人筆法。
錄陋室銘,山不在高,有仙則名,水不在深,有龍則靈,
斯是陋室,惟吾德馨。苔痕上瑎綠,草色入簾青,
談笑有鴻儒,往來無白丁,馬少宣。

Ma Shaoxuan (1867–1939), one of the most technically accomplished artists of the Beijing School of Snuff Bottle Painting, is known for his figural scenes, monochromatic portraits and depictions of collections of fragmentary paintings and calligraphic inscriptions on snuff bottles.
