Tanke Gessen (1741-1809) was a monk of the Jōdo sect, born in Nagoya. He was also a painter, specialising in Buddhist imagery, and became a prolific and commercially successful artist. He studied under Maruyama Okyo and was influenced by the work of Yosa Buson.
