each with a padded arched back and seat covered in silk damask, the frames carved with leaves and scrolls on cabriole legs and leather roller castors (2)
Catalogue Note
The design of the current lot relates to a set of chairs supplied to Charles Powett, 5th Duke of Bolton (1718-1765) for his London house in Grosvenor Square and which were subsequently removed to Hackwood Park, Hampshire, sold Christie’s, London, Hackwood Park, 20th-22nd April 1998, lots 119 & 120. A further related pair, attributed to William Vile & John Cobb, were supplied to Sir George Lyttelton, 5th Bt. and 1st Baron Lyttelton of Frankley (d. 1773) for Hagley Hall, Worcestershire. A very similar pair of chairs, originally with Michael Foster and sold at the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair in 1993 were subsequently sold by Christie's, Collections: Including the Property of the Earl of Harewood and From a Private Roman Apartment Overlooking the Tiber, 23rd October 2024, lot 178, which sold for £12,600 (including premium).
