AN EARLY VICTORIAN WALNUT WARDROBE
C.1860, INCORPORATING 18TH CENTURY ELEMENTS
of canted form, the cornice with carved with leaves above dentil and scale bands, with a central mirrored door flanked by a pair of doors each applied with six marquetry ornithological panels depicting birds perched on flowers within feather banding, enclosing a hanging space, drawers and shelves, the plinth with a foliate carved band

Catalogue Note
A paper label inside states 'This wardrobe was given by The Countess of Waldegrave to her Great Nephew John Sancroft (possibly) Holmes in 1865. The birds were inlaid by a man at Battle in Sussex in the year 1757.'.
Sarah, Countess of Waldegrave (1787 - 1873) was born Sarah Whitear, a clergyman's daughter, at Hastings Old Town Rectory. Her first marriage was to Edward Milward, a wealthy businessman and Mayor of Hastings. She used her position and wealth to help the poor of Hastings and the surrounding area. She subsequently married William Waldegrave, 8th Earl Waldegrave.
